Sew Outside and Enjoy the Outdoors!
Here is New York, nice warm weather can be limited to four months or so. Most of us try to enjoy the summer as much as possible. While sewing machines are typically used indoors, there are a few ways you can re-think your summer-time set-up and enjoy sewing outside in this nice summer weather.
Here are a few suggestions:
- Set up a designated outdoor sewing space: Find a shaded area in your backyard or patio where you can set up a sturdy table or work surface for your sewing machine. Ensure it's a stable surface to prevent any accidents.
- Use your traveler sewing machine: If you have a lighter, portable sewing machine, it will be easier to carry it outside, or bring it inside if the weather turns.
- Consider power sources: Make sure you have access to power outdoors. If your outdoor space doesn't have electrical outlets, grab an extension cord.
- Protect your machine from the elements: Keep your sewing machine covered or protected from direct sunlight, rain, or dust when not in use.
- Protect your threads from the elements: Keep your threads protected from direct sunlight, and consider using a thread stand or thread net if the breeze is strong.
- Stay organized: Grab all your basic sewing supplies and keep them within reach, including fabric, thread, needles, and scissors. Consider using storage solutions like caddies or a small tub container to keep your tools organized and prevent them from blowing away in the wind.
- Enjoy the scenery and fresh air!
- Take breaks in between sewing to appreciate our beautiful summer weather. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of nature while indulging in your sewing hobby.
- Invite your sewing friends and have an outdoor sewing party! Sewing outdoors can create a great socialization opportunity. Invite friends or family members who share your interest in sewing to join you.
- Stay mindful of distractions due to the outdoor environment. There can be a variety of distractions compared to your indoor sewing space, such as; insects, pets, or outdoor activities happening nearby.
- Remember, not all sewing projects may be suitable for outdoor sewing, especially if you're working with delicate fabrics or projects that require precise measurements. It's essential to assess the complexity of your project and whether the outdoor environment will affect its quality.
